EXTRA Program Overview

AYSO EXTRA is a soccer program geared toward providing an affordable and competitive soccer experience aimed at developing players for high school. EXTRA is designed to provide a more challenging level of play for those players who possess the appropriate interest, skills and abilities and to enhance each player's experience and individual growth through the game of soccer while retaining the spirit and organization of AYSO.
Our local EXTRA program is considered a “Side-by-Side” program, meaning that if you participate in EXTRA, you may not play on an AYSO core team at the same time.   Our EXTRA program is administered at the AREA level with a gaming circuit that includes AYSO AREA’s K, L and Q.  (Long Beach to San Clemente).

The benefits of the Extra program include:

- Advanced competition of play amongst teams in Orange County

- Lower cost compared to Club programs

- Fall and Spring season of play

- Coaching and team continuity

- Tournaments, camps, and clinics

- Local neighborhood/community field use

Region 154 will determine the number of EXTRA teams based upon the number of EXTRA-caliber players identified during evaluations and the availability of qualified coaches.

We will not form a team if we do not think it will be competitive.
We will not form a team if a qualified coach is not available.
Teams will be made of players in a single birth year
U08 teams: 10 on roster, play 7v7
U09 teams: up to 10 on roster, play 7v7
U10 teams: up to 10 on roster, play 7v7
U11 teams: up to 12 on roster, play 9v9
U12 teams: up to 15 on roster, play 11v11

Selection of Players

Teams are selected by a panel of experienced coaches.  We attempt to make the evaluations as impartial as possible by assigning each player a number and not providing the names of the players until after the evaluations have been completed and the players have been selected. Players will be notified if they have made a team.  Players not selected will be placed on one of our regular Fall Season teams.

The basic fee to register for the EXTRA Program is the same as our regular Fall Program.  EXTRA Players must pay an additional fee to cover the cost the cost of a second uniform and the EXTRA Program participation fee.  Teams sometimes elect to buy balls, bags or warm up suits or other items at the players’ expense.  There may also be fees for any optional tournaments in which your team participates.

Referee Coverage

All the Extra Team games are assigned a 3 man USSF crew by NOCRA and not AYSO Region 154. If you are interested in officiating these games, please see the 'How to Become an USSF/NOCRA Referee' tab under the Resources tab to register today!
